What does Philippians 4:13 really mean?

We have all heard this part of Philippians being used by preachers: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Sadly, it is so often taken completely out of context that many of us (myself included) have not been hearing the truth of what Paul meant when he penned these words.

This year I have been working my way through some phenomenal Bible teaching videos by David Pawson on YouTube. He explains the true meaning of Philippians 4:13 so well that I felt compelled to pass on what I've learnt. (Side note: If you are serious about going deeper with Jesus, I'll leave the link to David Pawsons channel below. Genuinely some of the best Christian teaching around.)

So...

What does Philippians 4:13 really mean?

This verse is about being able to live on your income. Paul is writing to say that he knows how to be content with what he has got. He is saying that “I have been able to cope with a little and with a lot, I've coped being well fed and being hungry, and that in all circumstances of life I am able to be content with what I have and what I haven't... through Christ who strengthens me.”

Paul has learnt the art of contentment, and he is explaining how we too can be content. Only through Christ who strengthens was Paul able to be content - that's what we can apply to our lives also. That with the wages we earn from our jobs or from the pension we receive, we can be content with them and give Jesus the glory because He gives us the strength to manage in life regardless.

I am grateful for David Pawsons teaching ministry Unlocking the Bible, because now I have been able to fully understand the real context behind the Holy Scriptures. Here are the links which I'm sure will be a huge blessing to you:
